From Cells to Studios: A Chance to Gain Hope and Healing Through Music

Give a Beat’s On a New Track Reentry Mentoring Program began its second cohort in March 2023. Our 12-week program is training seven folks who have recently been released from incarceration. Participants are learning how to DJ, produce music, and develop essential skills for a career within the music industry. By using music as a tool for healing and positive social engagement, we aim to empower these individuals and guide them toward a brighter future.

One of the most critical components of the On a New Track program is our mentors. Participants are paired with music industry professionals who serve as a guiding force throughout an extended year-round process. Through mentorship, we hope to foster personal growth and development in individuals who might have otherwise had a tougher time adjusting to life after prison. With the guidance of professionals in the field, participants have the chance to gain valuable insight and advice as they build their creative skills and their careers.

What sets our program apart is our dedication to building a personalized Artist Development Plan that each participant will work on with their mentor. This plan is geared toward mapping out goals and timelines for the future, all while providing a clear game plan for success. By working closely with their mentors, participants can better understand the music industry and navigate the steps necessary to achieve their goals.

On a New Track supports the reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals and empowera them with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to thrive. By providing music education, business skills, and personalized mentorship, we make a significant impact on the lives of returning citizens in California and beyond.

“I'm really finding out a lot about myself through this class. Like finding out what I really love. And being able to ask myself, ‘what don't I know?’ There's just so much to discover.”

- Robert, participant in our On a New Track Reentry Mentoring Program
