Unlocking Hope: Music Not Prisons with Lafonzo

Have you heard of the rose growing through concrete? Those thorny bushes are stubborn, tenacious, weather-resistant, and, most of all, pleasing to the eye. Sometimes that concrete is the streets of Watts, and the journey of a man who put music at the heart of his breakthrough as a testament to his persistence to flourish and blossom.

Lafonzo's journey in mentorship is a testament to the profound impact of Give a Beat’s On a New Track Reentry Mentoring Program. His compelling story reflects the transformative power of music and mentorship in redefining lives and offering second chances.

Lafonzo's introduction to Give a Beat occurred during his time in prison, where he participated in the Prison Electronic Music Program that inspired him to shape his own nonprofit vision.

Motivated by his experience with Billy Bannon, he made a promise to reach out upon his release, demonstrating the deep impression that Give a Beat mentors had left on him even within the confines of incarceration.

“I was serving a sentence of 14 years to life. In March 2022, I made a promise to Billy that I would reach out once I was released. In July 2022, my sentence was overturned.”

Upon being released in July 2022, Lafonzo sought to fulfill his promise and initially aimed to collaborate with Give a Beat in Compton. Unfortunately, the logistical challenges proved overwhelming. However, his resilience and determination led him to find another opportunity through the On a New Track program in Los Angeles, for which he expressed gratitude as it became an avenue for his participation. Lafonzo was the first participant to graduate both the Prison Electronic Music Program and On a New Track.

“Fortunately, the On a New Track program was available in Los Angeles, and I was grateful for the opportunity to participate. After completing the program, I realized the profound connection between music and healing.”

The On a New Track Reentry Mentoring Program is a part of Give a Beat’s initiatives to support individuals who are reintegrating into society after incarceration. Our program aims to provide mentorship and guidance to help these individuals successfully navigate the challenges they may face during this transition period. Through one-on-one mentoring relationships, the program offers personalized support, encouragement, and resources to help participants build a new and positive path in their lives through the healing power of music. Lafonzo's participation in the On a New Track program led him to realize the deep link between music and the process of healing. This realization fueled his passion for utilizing music as a tool for helping others—a mission that has become central to his nonprofit endeavors.

According to the University of Georgia, music is a powerful tool that can positively impact the brain, enhancing cognitive abilities and promoting emotional well-being.

Originally from Watts but raised in Compton, Lafonzo possesses a distinct perspective shaped by his experiences in these communities. His personal connection to music runs deep, as evidenced by his late brother’s involvement as a band member performing alongside rap icon Ice T. Growing up amidst significant societal challenges during the ‘80s provided Lafonzo with an understanding of the struggles faced by today’s youth.

"I have witnessed a lot of things in life, and now I am giving back to the youth through my wisdom. Unfortunately, it feels like the youth are running the streets and lacking direction. So, I have started doing nonprofit work with Street Poets, where we go inside youth prisons, camps, and juvenile schools and I am able to share my story of overcoming."

- Lafonzo

His dedication to giving back and guiding at-risk youth is evident through his nonprofit initiative, Music Not Prison. Disheartened at the sight of individuals under the age of 30 within the prison system, Lafonzo created an education program that leverages music's influence. Financial literacy, critical thinking skills, and strategies for avoiding trouble constitute key components of their 6-8 week sessions designed to engage and empower young individuals.

Despite making up only 16% of the youth population, Black and Latinx youth account for approximately 70% of youth in the juvenile justice system and almost 60% of the youths admitted to adult prison.

Lafonzo's personal narrative offers insight into how deeply intertwined music is with every aspect of his life. He draws upon pivotal moments—such as practicing with his brother’s band or receiving DJ equipment at 15—to highlight the positive role that music played in shaping him as an individual.

“As a young boy, my love for music began when I practiced with my brother's band in the garage. Music has had a profound impact on my life, and now I want to share that with others who may be at risk of making poor choices and ending up in prison.”

Moreover, overcoming adversity has been central to Lafonzo’s journey. A harrowing incident where he was shot in the face at 17 became instrumental in strengthening Lafonzo’s resolve.

“At 17, I was shot in the face, but I took that experience and turned it into a motivation to succeed. After I was released from the hospital, my brother took me to the studio and gave me money to continue my education. I even set up a full production studio at home.”

- Lafonzo

The support provided by On a New Track during Lafonzo’s transition period after incarceration epitomizes how pivotal resources like this mentoring program can be. By nurturing talent and channeling passion into constructive avenues like music and mentorship, these programs have far-reaching effects beyond immediate rehabilitation.

“The program supported me during my transition after incarceration and prepared me immensely. It provided me with a sense of family that I didn't have. I connected with Billy in prison but then met Todd, Esseance, and Tagus through On a New Track. Learning from each of them gave me a strong sense of belonging I never had.”

Lafonzo's rose is still blooming and inspiring others to grow. His determination to turn adversity into motivation, and the positive impact of programs like On a New Track, highlight the importance of providing resources for individuals seeking a fresh start. Your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of those striving to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams.
