Celebrating Music and Milestones!

At Give a Beat, we believe in the power of music to transform lives and foster connections within communities. It is with great joy and pride that we share the recent graduation of seven talented participants from our “On a New Track” Reentry Mentoring Program. This program pairs returning residents with professional music industry mentors as they learn the art of music production, DJing, and related business and creative entrepreneurial skills.

The graduation ceremony, held on Tuesday, June 20th, was an event filled with excitement, camaraderie, and a powerful sense of accomplishment. As the participants showcased their newfound talent through DJ sets, it was evident that their hard work and dedication had paid off. The room was alive with energy as family, friends, mentors, and community members gathered to celebrate this special milestone.

“I appreciate the support team. I feel like I have a family of artists here.”

- Lafonso, On a New Track participant

During the opening lesson of the program, participants shared their reflections and goals. Themes such as patience, stepping outside comfort zones, perseverance, and support from the community resonated throughout their heartfelt expressions. This emphasis on gratitude and inspiration carried on throughout the entire program.

“This program helped me rediscover my inner artist. I’m grateful to have tools to celebrate our achievements.”

- Robert, On a New Track participant

One participant expressed their appreciation for personal growth and rediscovering their artistic abilities. They highlighted how being part of this supportive community helped them overcome challenges and tap into their creativity.

“I have gained patience and am grateful for the connections I’ve made, which have opened up new avenues for me. I am finally doing what I’ve always wanted to do and I couldn’t be more grateful. Being part of a supportive community is pretty cool,”

- Daniel aka "Dee Ritual", On a New Track participant

As Billy, the Program Manager and Lead Teaching Artist, took the stage during the ceremony, he posed thought-provoking questions about knowing when our work is good and how forward motion looks like. He emphasized that it’s not just about external validation but also about listening to our inner voice—the silent whisper that brings us joy, awe, and elation.

The “Artists Supporting Artists” mantra permeated every aspect of this graduation ceremony. Participants felt an overwhelming sense of belonging to a family—a community united by their love for music. The connections forged during this program will continue to thrive beyond graduation, as these talented individuals embark on their own unique journeys in the music industry.

“I was proud of myself… and how we used the arts to transform, connect and heal. This program was a reminder to let things grow.”

- Camille, On a New Track Program Mentor

Give a Beat extends heartfelt gratitude to the seven graduates, five mentors, and our dedicated program leaders, Billy and Malachi. Their commitment and passion have made this program a resounding success. We are honored to have been part of their musical journey and look forward to witnessing their continued growth.

As we celebrate these milestones, we invite you to stay tuned for more updates on the graduates’ journey in the coming weeks. Their stories will inspire and remind us of the healing power of music and the second chances it can provide.

Join us at Give a Beat as we continue our mission of making positive change through music. Together, let’s create a world where transformative experiences and connections thrive!
