Beyond the Beats: Celebrating Teaching Artists During Teacher Appreciation Month at Give a Beat

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Month, let's pause to acknowledge the profound influence our Teaching Artists have had on participants across various sites under the wings of Give a Beat. These heartfelt stories offer a glimpse into a world of music, mentorship, and transformative growth experienced throughout these programs.

Los Padrinos Detention Hall

Teaching Artists Shaine and Malachi play a pivotal role at Los Padrinos Detention Hall by valuing the importance of encouraging questions and nurturing curiosity among participants. By skillfully providing prompts for inquiry and creating an environment conducive to exploration and engagement, they inspire a genuine passion for learning and discovery. Their impact extends beyond teaching; it lies in their ability to ignite a sense of wonder and a thirst for knowledge in those they interact with.

Lennox Park

At Lennox Park, Teaching Artists Billy and Shaine take a hands-on approach to teaching music theory basics. They delve into counting, beats, bars, and phrases, establishing a strong link between math and music. This approach resonates deeply with participants passionate about both fields, fostering a profound understanding of the subject matter. Billy and Shaine's innovative methods inspire students to view music theory as a language for creativity and self-expression, leaving a lasting appreciation for the beauty of music beyond the classroom.

Fresh Tracks

Chaz, the Teaching Artist at Fresh Tracks, emphasizes the significance of a supportive community in fostering personal growth. Through active engagement and unwavering support, he not only cultivates a nurturing environment but also empowers individuals to realize their full potential.

California Rehabilitation Center (CRC) - Norco

At CRC Norco, the Teaching Artists Billy and Angela have found a unique approach to fostering dialogue and self-reflection by leveraging the power of music. Through delving into the emotional significance of music, reminiscing about past memories, and uncovering the personal narratives associated with DJ names, they create spaces that transcend traditional educational boundaries, encouraging deep introspection and forging genuine connections among participants.

California Correctional Institution (CCI) - Tehachapi

Teaching Artists Esseance and Chaz are often wholeheartedly embraced with wide smiles and deep gratitude upon their arrival at CCI Tehachapi. Their nurturing and guiding presence radiates a sense of comfort and optimism, infusing the learning space with a bright atmosphere. Through engaging interactions and innovative activities, they spark a sense of curiosity and creativity in the participants, nurturing self-discovery and growth on a personal level.

Los Angeles County (LAC) - Lancaster

Teaching Artists Malachi and Chaz at LAC Lancaster engage in impactful discussions beyond music, touching on themes like manhood, life decisions, and personal growth. Their influence is evident in the transformative journeys of participants, such as one individual who achieved sobriety and early release, highlighting the profound impact of Teaching Artists

"As the co-founder and Executive Director, I could have only dreamed of having such a wonderful group of dedicated, down-to-earth, knowledgeable, and passionate roster of Teaching Artists to carry out the mission of Give a Beat. Their roles are difficult and crucial, navigating the demands of a growing organization within the massive and complex carceral system, reaching the men inside with our curriculum and the healing power of music. They drive hours every week to and from each prison. Sometimes there are yard closures where they have to turn around and drive home knowing the guys are missing out on this precious time where they get to feel "human" by the "free people" visiting. We hear this a lot. This work is heavy on the heart but they persevere. We are deeply grateful to the Teaching Artists and the value of their work." - Lauren Segal, Executive Director

Throughout Teacher Appreciation Month at Give a Beat, these stories illustrate dedication, compassion, and resilience embedded in each Teaching Artist's work. From nurturing musical talent to fostering personal growth and reflection, every interaction leaves a lasting impact on both educators and participants alike.

As we celebrate our artistic educators who inspire minds through creativity and compassion, let's recognize their invaluable contributions to our communities. The dedication of Teaching Artists at Give a Beat serves as a beacon of hope for brighter futures, filled with possibility and promise, touched by their unwavering commitment to making a difference one beat at a time.
